Possible Questions from Peers
Why is Logan’s mommy in class with him / why does Logan have a helper at school?
Logan’s mom (or helper) is there to support him with things he might need extra help with, like using the bathroom, completing table work and staying focused. His mommy is like a coach - cheering him on and making sure he can do his best!
Why is Logan sometimes extra silly or excited?
Logan has a big personality and loves to have fun! And he really loves making other kids laugh. If you notice Logan jumping up and down and flapping his hands that is because he is really excited about what’s going on. The jumping and flapping his hands feel really good to his body.
Why does Logan sometimes have trouble talking?
Logan’s brain works a little differently, and its takes his brain longer to communicate with the muscles in his mouth, which help to form words and sounds. Even though he has trouble speaking, he understands a lot. If you’re ever not sure what he is trying to say you can ask him to repeat it or just be patient - he’ll find a way to tell you!
What should I say if I don‘t understand what Logan is saying?
You can say “I don’t understand what’s you’re trying to tell me. Can you show me?” He is pretty good at finding other ways to communicate. You can also be patient and give him a little extra time to respond.
Why does Logan try to run out of the classroom?
Sometimes when Logan feels overwhelmed, excited, or unsure of what’s happening next, his brain tells his body to move. Running is his way to feel safe or find something familiar. He’s not trying to be bad - his brain just works differently. That’s why there are locks on the doors to keep him safe in the classroom.
Why does Logan sometimes act differently?
Logan’s brain processes the world in a unique way. Sometimes he gets really excited about things he loves, and other times he might need a break if things feel too loud or busy. Just like everyone, he has feelings and needs. If he ever seems upset, the best thing you can do is be kind and patient.
Why does Logan look different from me?
People with Down syndrome are born with an extra chromosome. And chromosomes are the building blocks of your appearance, your personality, your likes and dislikes - like how some people have curly hair or freckles or green eyes or like hockey. That extra chromosome is why Logan looks different from you.
What’s wrong with him?
There isn’t anything wrong with Logan - he just has Down syndrome. What makes you ask that? Are you noticing something different about Logan?
Why does he play with toys that way (noticing Logan shaking the toy between his thumb and pointer finger)?
Logan likes the way certain toys move, feel or sound. It helps him feel calm and happy. Have you ever played with a toy in a way that wasn’t what the box said? Like using blocks to make a race track instead of a tower? Play looks different for everyone, and that’s okay!
Why does Logan have a fidget that he chews on and shakes?
Logan’s fidget helps him feel calm and focused. You know how some people like to tap their pencil or play with this hair or tap their foot? Logan’s brain and body need extra movement to feel comfortable, so he uses his fidget to help him focus and feel happy.
Why does Logan scribble when he colors? / Why does he not know how to write his letters or draw shapes or use scissors, etc. ?
Logan is still learning how to use his hands for tricky things like coloring, writing and cutting. His muscles need extra practice to get stronger. He’s working really hard so if you ever see him practicing, you can cheer him on - he loves that!
Why does Logan use different crayons than everyone else?
Just like talking, Logan’s brain and the muscles in his hands don’t work the same way as yours do. So using special crayons helps him get a better grip and feel more comfortable when he’s coloring or practicing his letters. Its kind of like how some people wear glasses to help them see better.
Is Logan like a baby?
Nope! Logan is the same age as you, and he loves a lot of the same things other kids do. So don’t use baby talk when you talk to him. He might take longer to learn new things, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t smart. He just learns at his own pace - kind of like how some kids learn to ride a bike faster than others!
Why is there a special day to celebrate Logan?
There are lots of mommies and daddies in the world who have kids that are just like Logan. And those mommies and daddies worked really hard to get a special day on the calendar to remind everyone that being different is not a bad thing. And that you shouldn’t be afraid of someone who has Down syndrome. Understanding why people with Down syndrome do things differently helps you realize they are kids just like you and they want to have friends and play and be included in activities.
Can Logan learn new things?
Yes! Logan learns new things all the time. Sometimes he just need more time or a different way to practice. If you ever see him working hard at something, cheering him on can make a big difference!
